2015 was a great year for us here at We had some great opportunities to interview a variety of inspiring and innovative business owners – some of which we caught on camera!

Here’s a roundup of our top five favourite businesses from our Bosses series:

1. Lady Bakewell-Park

It all began with a passion for baking and a blog documenting the adventures of a self-taught baker, weddings and London life.

Lady B used to work for a design company in the city but ‘her heart was really in the kitchen’. After a stint in the city she upped and moved to the countryside to pursue her dream.

She didn’t want to write under her real name so the brand and persona Lady Bakewell- Park was established – a portmanteau between her favourite treat the Bakewell Tart and Victoria Park (where she was living at the time).

Inspired by her mother, she aims to capture the same homely feel of British baking but with a twist - ‘mojito cupcakes’ are a perfect example! caught up with Lady B (and Baby B) to talk business, Bakewells, petites fours and parenthood! Watch our video here!



2. Costume Boutique

For our Halloween special we visited the fabulous, West London fancy dress shop Costume Boutique.

Owner, Tamar Zaig has always been fascinated with costumes and designed costumes for adverts and television programmes before deciding to run her own business.

The idea for Costume Boutique started five years ago when a friend offered her their small scale fancy dress business. Merging these costumes with her own unique collection, she now has an extensive wardrobe of high quality, vintage, handmade and one off pieces.

With the ethos to make people look and ‘feel stylish in them and not just silly’, Tamar’s passion for design is evident and her talent for creating costumes has allowed her to offer a more tailored service to her clients.

3. Timberyard

We just couldn’t resist popping into our local coffee shop Timberyard to talk to founders, Darren and Ruth about running an independent coffee shop.

After discovering a ‘lack of good coffee shops to have meetings in’ Ruth decided to take the matter into her own hands.

Teaming up with Darren three years ago the duo started their grand tour of London coffee shops, researching the market before taking the leap.

Noticing a gap in the market, they decided to start a coffee shop with a focus on lifestyle and work. Likened to a modern London apartment, the shop breaks the mould of ‘boring meetings and bad coffee’, providing comfortable co-working spaces and meeting places for the local creative clientele.

Their slogan is ‘Tea, coffee, work, play, reimagined’ – and it says it all! Watch our video to see for yourselves!



4. the fresh flower company

In the run up to Valentine’s Day we spoke to Fran Bailey, owner of the fresh flower company in East Dulwich.

Fran’s father came to England from Holland after the war, and with him he brought his knowledge and experience of flower growing.

Due to her horticultural family history, Fran has always been surrounded by flowers. Growing up on a flower nursery in Yorkshire, her childhood house was surrounded by greenhouses and her family owned a garden centre and flower shop.

The business started 15 years ago after she attended college for three years, she then went on to become a freelance events florist but as the recession hit decided to open her brick and mortar shop 8 years ago.

Fran’s naturalistic style of floristry makes the fresh flower company different from their competitors, combining traditional vintage with English home grown and seasonal garden flowers hand-picked daily from New Covent Garden flower market. Watch our video here! 



5. Storm in a D Cup

Veronica Moretti is the founder of swimwear brand Storm in a D Cup. Catering to the needs of larger busted ladies, the brand addresses a gap in the market and the lack of choice.

Ranging from a 30D – 40G cup they privilege the importance of design and make flatteringly shaped and structured swimwear for the best possible fit.

Veronica’s first job was in a swimwear shop and since then she has always loved the industry. As a start-up venture Storm in a D Cup quickly became popular and they became a wholesale retailer, supplying department stores like Harvey Nicolls and Harrods.

However, Veronica started to feel like she was losing control of her brand and made the decision to make it an exclusive online brand, allowing them to focus more on their customer service and regain direct control. Watch our video here!
